Getting ready for your first electrolysis session? A little preparation can go a long way in making your experience more comfortable and effective. We’ll walk you through five simple steps to help you feel confident and ready when you arrive at Ober Yahr Electrolysis. From hydrating properly to avoiding certain hair removal methods, these tips will help set the stage for a successful treatment.
1. Hydrate for Comfort
Well-hydrated skin responds better to electrolysis and can make treatments more comfortable. Be sure to drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment—especially the day before. Try to limit dehydrating substances like caffeine and alcohol, as they can make the skin more sensitive during treatment.
2. Avoid Short-Term Hair Removal
Please avoid plucking or waxing for at least 2–3 weeks before your appointment and allow a minimum of 48 hours of hair growth from shaving. Electrolysis requires visible hair to be effective, so aim for about 1/8 of an inch of hair growth above the skin’s surface.
Just as important, once your electrolysis treatment plan begins, tweezing or waxing should be avoided entirely. These methods remove the hair root and disrupt the growth cycle, which can halt progress and delay results. Allowing hair to grow naturally ensures each follicle can be treated accurately and efficiently, keeping your treatments on track and moving you closer to permanent results.
3. Arrive With Clean, Product-Free Skin
Come to your appointment with clean, bare skin—no makeup, deodorant, lotions, oils, or creams on the treatment area. Your electrologist will take care of all necessary skin preparation. If you’re using any skincare products with strong or active ingredients, please let us know so we can assess whether they may cause irritation during treatment.
4. Prepare for Sensations
If you’re feeling a little nervous about comfort, that’s completely normal. Some clients choose to take an over-the-counter pain reliever before their appointment, but we recommend being mindful of which option you use.
Certain common pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or aspirin, can increase the likelihood of bruising during electrolysis—even if they’re taken a few days beforehand. If you feel you need something for comfort, acetaminophen (like Tylenol®) is the best choice, as it does not have blood-thinning effects.
If you’re unsure or have questions, please don’t hesitate to ask—we’re always happy to talk through comfort options and help you feel as relaxed and prepared as possible.
5. Communicate Openly
Your comfort and well-being are our top priorities. Please communicate any sensations, concerns, or questions during your session so adjustments can be made as needed. If you need to cancel or reschedule, we kindly ask for at least 24 hours’ notice to allow another client the opportunity to book that time.
With these simple steps, you’ll be well-prepared and ready for your electrolysis appointment at Ober Yahr Electrolysis. If you have any questions before your visit, don’t hesitate to reach out—we look forward to welcoming you and supporting you on your hair removal journey.
